The San Diego Model Railroad Museum is excited to announce an opportunity to join our Weekend Garden Docent program. The Centennial Railroad Garden is a highlight of the museum, combining a love for Balboa park, model railroading and gardening. We are looking for volunteers to help run the trains, tend to the garden and help ensure our guests enjoy their experience. As the 4th most visited museum in the park, we need volunteers to help keep this popular attraction open for the public.
Our Weekend Garden Docents are in charge of cleaning the wheels and tracks of our custom models, watering the garden and helping with any guest questions. This is a perfect opportunity for anyone with an interest in history, model trains or gardening.
The volunteer shift is 7 hours Saturday and Sunday, each weekend of the month. We can schedule you for as many or as few shifts as available.
No experience necessary, training provided.
Museum Docents greet and welcome guests, point out fun details and answer questions about the various layouts, and provide tours to guests when needed.
Shift is minimum 4 hours per day worked
The first Tuesday of the month is free to county residents. The ambassador will greet guests and verify residency. The ambassador will also maintain a count of those who enter.
Shift is 6.5 hours
Special event volunteers assist with greeting, check in, set up, and assisting with silent auctions.
Shift is minimum 5 hours
Counselors will be working with children ages 7-15 and assisting with various activities. These activities include assemble of HO scale model layouts, field trips, setup/cleanup and much more!
Shift varies from 4 to 8 hours
Collections volunteers work with the museum’s Curator of Collections using both PastPerfect and Piction to organize and maintain the museum’s artifact collection.
An interest in history
Highly organized and able to follow established standards and procedures.
Previous experience with databases. Content management or collections management systems preferred.
Ability to work well and communicate with others.
