On Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 6:00 PM, the museum will be celebrating the San Diego Model Railroad Museum’s new exhibit: Building Steam. This exhibit will explore the origins of steam locomotives in Britain; their spread within the United Kingdom; and their expansion throughout the world. Building Steam is made possible thanks to a generous donation of OO scale model English trains from the late Michael Ward, who was a lifelong railroad and model train enthusiast, and his family.
The San Diego Model Railroad Museum will need help with the following: set up, greeting guests, museum floater, replenishing food and drink, directing guests, break down and clean up.

The San Diego Model Railroad Museum is excited to announce an opportunity to join our Weekend Garden Docent program. The Centennial Railroad Garden is a highlight of the museum, combining a love for Balboa park, model railroading and gardening. We are looking for volunteers to help run the trains, tend to the garden and help ensure our guests enjoy their experience. As the 4th most visited museum in the park, we need volunteers to help keep this popular attraction open for the public.
Our Weekend Garden Docents are in charge of cleaning the wheels and tracks of our custom models, watering the garden and helping with any guest questions. This is a perfect opportunity for anyone with an interest in history, model trains or gardening.
The volunteer shift is 7 hours Saturday and Sunday, each weekend of the month. We can schedule you for as many or as few shifts as available.
No experience necessary, training provided.
